Illustration Friday Topic: Spooky
I figured I needed to get a Halloween image up this month, and the Illustration Friday topic "Spooky" gave me the perfect excuse to create something fun and seasonal.
About the Illustration
This piece features a classic witch character flying on a broomstick against a dark night sky. The style is a mix of cartoon and slightly spooky - appropriate for Halloween but still approachable and fun.
The illustration was created entirely in Adobe Illustrator using a combination of gradient meshes, custom brushes, and the Pen Tool. The color palette is intentionally limited to purples, blacks, and oranges to reinforce the Halloween theme.
The Creative Process
Here's a quick breakdown of how this illustration came together:
- Sketching - I started with a quick pencil sketch to work out the composition and character design
- Line art - I traced the sketch in Illustrator using a custom brush for organic line variation
- Flat colors - I laid down the base colors using simple shapes and the Live Paint bucket
- Shading and highlights - I added gradients and mesh objects to create volume and depth
- Background and atmosphere - I added the night sky, moon, and atmospheric elements
- Final details - I added textures, shadows, and final polish
